THE European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published four scientific opinions on monitoring procedures in slaughterhouses. The opinions include a ‘toolbox’ of welfare indicators for developing monitoring procedures in slaughterhouses dealing with cattle, sheep and goats, pigs and poultry.
The opinions, which were published in December last year, follow a consultation by the EFSA in July 2013 on proposals for using animal-based indicators and sampling protocols to monitor animal welfare at slaughterhouses (VR, July 27, 2013, vol 173, p 83). The work has been carried out in the context of new European legislation on welfare at slaughter, which came into force in January 2013.
