Defra seeks views on strengthening TB controls applied to cattle

DEFRA is inviting views on a proposal to strengthen cattle bovine TB controls by abolishing the current TB pre-movement testing exemption for movements within Sole Occupancy Authorities (SOAs) situated in annual TB testing areas in England. Other matters discussed in a consultation document issued by the department last week include risk-based trading and post-movement testing. The consultation is currently open and will run until July 11.

Defra introduced the legal requirement for pre-movement testing in 2006 to reduce the risk of TB being spread through cattle movements; since then, cattle moved from herds subject to annual or two-yearly TB surveillance testing must have had a negative test within the 60 days before they are moved. …
