THE Independent Expert Panel's report on the pilot badger culls that took place in 2013 made key recommendations that it believed would improve both the effectiveness of the pilots overall and the humaneness of controlled shooting. We welcomed the Secretary of State's statement that he accepted the report's findings and that he intended to follow the majority of its recommendations. This has served to highlight the challenge of implementing what we believe is an essential component of a broad comprehensive TB control programme, and we agree with Den Leonard's recent letter (VR, May 24, 2014, vol 174, pp 535-536) emphasising the importance of representative bodies being clear and reasoned on this subject.

There is a need to understand the complexities of the disease and its challenges. There are no simple solutions. Strategic and carefully targeted application of all available control options is necessary. Sound bites grab the attention but give little regard …
