Researchers draw attention to ‘toxic shock-like’ infection in dogs

RESEARCHERS at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) are encouraging dog owners and vets to familiarise themselves with the clinical signs of Streptococcus zooepidemicus infection, which manifests in a similar manner to toxic shock syndrome in people and causes a severe, bloody pneumonia in dogs.

They are also asking UK vets who are treating affected dogs to consider submitting swab samples to help in their research.
