IN tribute to Keith Lander (VR, March 1, 2014, vol 174, p 227), Fiona Stuart and Robin Bell write: With his easy-going charm, friendly manner and infectious smile Keith Lander made many friends in his interesting life, which involved several changes of country and career.

Keith was born in 1937 in Zambia but grew up in Southern Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe. He went to school at St George's College in Salisbury, where he was keen on cricket and rugby, and was academically gifted, though he always preferred sport to study. After working on a friend's dairy farm, he applied to Edinburgh university to study veterinary medicine.

After qualifying in 1961, he spent a few years in large animal and mixed practice in Middlesbrough and Brecon. He and his first wife, Rosalie, a GP, then emigrated to Rhodesia, and Keith worked for the veterinary field service at Wankee, where, as the sole vet in a large area, …
