Pig producers warned to be wary when using spray-dried porcine plasma

PIG industry associations are encouraging pig producers to ‘take every precaution’ when using spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) in feed for young pigs, while a potential link between the specialist feed ingredient and porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) is investigated.

In a press release on March 11, the National Pig Association (NPA) reported that positive PCR test results in the USA and bioassay tests by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had suggested that SDPP is capable of containing PED virus, but not that it is necessarily capable of transmitting the disease.
