EFSA advises on field trials to test TB vaccination of cattle

THE challenges involved in designing field trials to test the performance of any bovine TB vaccine for cattle are set out in a recent opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

In a scientific opinion published on December 11, the EFSA discusses the structure of field trials to test and validate a candidate bovine TB vaccine together with supporting tests to differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA). It says that field trials should also aim to validate the use of a vaccine as a contributory tool to help with the eradication of bovine TB when applied alongside the test and cull programme that is currently conducted within the EU.
