A NEW Zealand police dog that was shot and killed while protecting its wounded handler during a drugs search has become the 23rd animal to receive the PDSA Gold Medal. The charity awards the medal to animals that are instrumental in saving animal or human life when their own lives are in jeopardy or through outstanding devotion to duty.
