Guarded response to AHVLA's tendering plans

THE BVA and British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) have reacted cautiously to the AHVLA's announcement that it will be changing the way it procures the services of private practitioners to carry out TB testing and other Official Veterinarian (OV) activities on behalf of the state.

The AHVLA confirmed last week that it intended to procure OV services through a competitive tendering process, awarding contracts to delivery partners who would be expected to supply a package of veterinary services, including TB testing and other government-funded services (VR, August 3, 2013, vol 173, p 103). Other changes include the introduction of a modular certificate of competence, which would be held by an individual veterinarian and be fully portable between employers. The AHVLA wants to implement the new model from mid-2014.
