I WOULD like to congratulate the workers in Ireland on a much needed study, ‘Pathogen profile of clinical mastitis in Irish dairy herds reveals a complex aetiology’ (Keane and others 2013). It provides a sound basis for further research on this important disease that reduces both milk quality and production as well as affecting animal welfare, antibiotic use and the environmental footprint of dairy farming.
