New dog breeding rules to come into force in Northern Ireland

NEW legislation to regulate commercial dog breeders in Northern Ireland will come into force on April 1. The Welfare of Animals (Dog Breeding Establishments and Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations (NI) 2013 will set out welfare standards with which commercial dog breeders must comply.

The new regulations were subject to public consultation in 2011 (VR, October 29, 2011, vol 169, p 455). Under the new rules, a breeding establishment will be defined as one or more premises, within the same district council area, operated by the same person, from which that person keeps three or more breeding bitches and breeds three or more litters of puppies in any 12-month period; advertises three or more litters of puppies …
