The BVA has launched a new guide providing information and advice for the years leading up to retirement and beyond.

THE new BVA guide to planning for your last 10 years in practice is aimed at helping members making financial decisions as they head towards retirement, as well as giving tips for adjusting to retired life. The resource has been described by members who have read it as being a valuable source of information for members at any age.

The guide contains information on financial planning, including ‘Managing your finances in the last 10 years’ and ‘Planning for retirement – where do you start?’. Other chapters provide advice and guidance for partners, including the importance of succession planning, exit options for practice owners and preparing a practice for sale.

Options for changing career or role within the profession in the run up to retirement are also outlined within the guide, as are options for those who are considering continuing working after retirement.

A chapter gives practical tips for adjusting to retired life, with case studies by practitioners who share their experiences of retirement – all of which are very different.

The guide emphasises the importance of financial planning for retirement from a young age, and the information within it is suitable for a wider audience than just those approaching retirement. A recent graduate who read the guide commented that the financial planning sections certainly made her think about her finances.
