IN tribute to Ian Hutchison Sutherland (VR, January 12, 2013, vol 172, p 51), John Preston and James Armour write: Ian Sutherland was born in Edinburgh in 1931 and was educated at George Heriot's School and Edinburgh University, where he gained a BSc in bacteriology and zoology. He then proceeded to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, having collected medals in pathology, bacteriology and medicine en route.
In 1956, he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and was posted to the Animal Transport Troop of the King's African Rifles in Kenya. He revelled in regimental life and, aside from his military duties, represented the regiment at polo, eventing and show jumping.
