IN tribute to Doreen Bateman (VR, May 18, 2013, vol 172, p 534), Dick Smith writes: Doreen Bateman (née Fawbert)was born on May 7, 1921, in Castleford, Yorkshire, one of three daughters of schoolteacher parents, and was educated at Goole Grammar School for Girls. She did well in science subjects and at 16 years of age had made up her mind, despite opposition from her teachers, to apply to the Royal Veterinary College to become a vet. She was a very determined person and passed the entrance interview to become the sole woman in her year. It was there that she met her future husband and partner, Norman. …
