In May 1983, a group of BVA members signed the trust deeds for the charity now known as the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF). The veterinary trustees believed the profession was ideally placed to identify animal welfare problems and propose practical solutions through veterinary science, education and debate. The AWF continues to base its activities on these objectives.
