Kim Whittlestone writes: Peter Dawson was born in 1935 and grew up in Northern Ireland. He was schooled in Belfast and, after a first degree in zoology at Queen's University Belfast, obtained his BVM&S from Edinburgh in 1960. Peter had always intended to go into research, so after three months in a mixed practice in Leeds, he joined the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) in Weybridge, Surrey.
