The treatise has been published by the initiators of the interdisciplinary neuropathology courses offered by the European School of Advanced Veterinary Studies (ESAVS), namely Marc Vandevelde and Bob Higgins, and the youngest Bernese successor of Rudolph Frankhauser, Anna Oevermann.

In stark contrast to previous books on the subject, the authors have an emphasis on classifications and diagnostic and pathobiological algorithms illustrated by individual cases, rather than creating an encyclopaedia of neuropathological entities.
