IN tribute to Vivienne Mary Bowler (neé James) (VR, March 16, 2013, vol 172, p 295), John Bourne writes: Vivienne Bowler came from a Somerset family of timber merchants. During her education at Elmhurst School, Street, she developed a great interest in animals and natural history. Many of her friends were from farming families and these factors led her to a career as a veterinary practitioner.

At the Royal Veterinary College, she met Geoffrey (VR, April 3, 1999, vol 144, p 391), her future husband, while dissecting a chicken. They both qualified in 1948 and married in 1950 to form a strong, loving and lasting relationship. By …
