GAIRN Ross, PDSA's former director of veterinary services, Richard Hooker its current director of veterinary services, and past and present members of its veterinary team write: We were PDSA colleagues of Peter Mann for many years and were extremely saddened to hear about the loss of a veterinary surgeon whose influence on the charity cannot be underestimated.

Peter qualified from London in 1958 and by the mid-70s he was a partner in a very successful practice in Brighton. He also held a Diploma in Veterinary Radiology and was past-president of the BSAVA.

However, despite all of this success, Peter was looking for a new challenge. Coincidentally, at this time Elgar Rowling, general secretary of the PDSA, was hunting for a high-profile veterinary surgeon to lead and modernise the charity.
