Mike Nelson writes: Peter George Herbert Mann was born on May 30, 1932, in Kuala Lumpur, where his father was the principal of the school of agriculture. Peter's grandmother visited Kuala Lumpur in 1935 and took Peter with her when she returned to the UK, so that he could start his education. Peter's parents visited in 1937, but his father later returned to Kuala Lumpur, leaving his wife with Peter in the UK. When the Japanese invaded Malaya in 1941, Peter's father was imprisoned in Changi jail in Singapore, but he survived to enjoy his family after the Japanese surrender in August …
