MEPs demand a change in attitude towards use of antimicrobials

THE right to prescribe antimicrobials for animals should be restricted to veterinarians and separated from the right to sell such drugs in order to avoid creating economic incentives to prescribe.

This is one of the proposals in a resolution on antimicrobial resistance adopted by the European Parliament on December 11. MEPs adopted the resolution, which is non-binding, voting 588 for and 16 against, with 23 abstentions. The vote follows the adoption of a resolution by the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee in November (VR, November 17, 2012, vol 171, p 490).
