STRATEGIES for addressing welfare issues associated with rearing entire male pigs are the focus of a new report produced by the Food Animal Initiative (FAI), an agriculture and science consultancy. The report, ‘Entire male pig production: welfare management issues’, was commissioned by Pfizer and outlines some of the problems caused by housing entire male pigs in commercial units. It discusses a range of potential solutions, including the use of Pfizer's vaccine Improvac, which reduces testosterone levels without the need for castration.
