NEW guidelines on sentencing those found guilty of dangerous dog offences came into force in England on August 20, with the aim of helping courts to use the full extent of their powers when dealing with irresponsible owners who allow their dogs to be dangerously out of control.
The Kennel Club has welcomed the introduction of the new sentencing guidelines, calling them ‘a step in the right direction in reforming current flawed dangerous dog legislation’. However, it is concerned that the measures by themselves will not fully protect the public from incidents involving dangerous dogs, because they are reactive rather than preventative.
