New test to tackle degenerative neurological disease in beagles

A GENETIC mutation that causes neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration (NCCD) in beagles has been identified by researchers at the Kennel Club Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust (AHT). A DNA test to identify dogs carrying the mutation has now been launched.

The discovery of the mutation was made possible by a beagle breeder, Jacqui Walton, who brought a four-week-old puppy to the AHT's Small Animal Centre.
