Virus projects awarded £12 million

TWO projects that aim to provide novel solutions to help combat foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and emerging poultry viruses have between them been awarded almost £12 million by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Over £5.6 million has been awarded to a collaborative project that will integrate work being done by researchers at the Pirbright Institute with work at the universities of St Andrews, Leeds, Edinburgh and Dundee. The researchers will look at how FMD virus grows in, and interacts with, cells, and aim to harness that knowledge to help improve diagnosis and develop a new generation of more effective vaccines.
