IN tribute to James Burnett Ritchie Ironside (VR, October 13, 2012, vol 171, p 379), Ian L. Stretch writes: James Ironside died at his home at Spanish Point, Miltown Malbay, Clare, Ireland, in his 80th year. Jim, as he was more commonly known, was born in Leicestershire, the son of a veterinary surgeon of Aberdeenshire farming stock, who worked for the Department of Agriculture and died at a relatively young age.
Jim qualified at the Dick Veterinary School, Edinburgh, in 1956, which was the last year when membership of the RCVS was awarded by examination. He was one of the few of that year's intake who had not done national service …
