EFSA suggests a toolbox of measures for assessing animal welfare

DEVELOPMENT of a ‘toolbox’ of animal-based measures for assessing animal welfare is suggested in a recently published opinion from the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA's) Animal Health and Welfare (AHAW) panel.

The EFSA has already published advice on the use of animal-based measures in assessing the welfare of dairy cattle and pigs (VR, February 4, 2012, vol 170, p 112). However, it says, some issues arose in producing that advice when a risk assessment approach was combined with a welfare assessment approach. The latest opinion summarises some of these issues with the aim of contributing towards establishing a common framework for future EFSA scientific opinions dealing with the use of animal-based measures in the assessment of welfare.
