Iraq has a long-standing, well-established history of veterinary education, says Kareema Al-Salihi of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Baghdad university. However, it is currently in an ‘unenviable’ situation, with depleted resources following years of economic sanctions, and a lack of facilities and equipment as a result of financial constraints imposed by the Gulf wars. Professor Al-Salihi argues that there is now an urgent need to revitalise the system of veterinary education in Iraq and discusses ways in which this might be achieved.
