Mary Pett and John Herbert write: John Malseed was the son of a doctor in Northern Ireland, who originally intended to follow his father into that profession. On leaving school in 1942, he gained a place to study medicine at Edinburgh but, thinking that the war would only last another year, decided to take what would now be called a gap year.
