IN tribute to Alfred Marr (VR, February 25, 2012, vol 170, p 210), Eric Jackson writes: Alfie Marr was born into an Aberdeenshire farming family in November 1924. This was not the most prosperous time for mixed farming but, combined with his early school education, it was to shape his lifelong interests and career. His considerable knowledge and appreciation of classical music and opera was initiated by his primary school teacher. Few could have appreciated at that early stage just how much knowledge and information the young Alfie was set to assimilate and use throughout his adult life.
