New committee members for 2012
The BVA's Nominations and Awards Group, a committee of BVA Council with responsibility for appointing new members to the various BVA standing committees, has elected Gillian Hubbard and Matthew Tong to the Members' Services Group.
THE primary role of the BVA Members' Services Group (MSG) is to develop services that support the Association's members in their professional lives. MSG also works on issues such as education and student debt, as well as matters surrounding professional conduct and practice standards.
Jill and Matthew will bring a wealth of experience to the committee, including that of mentoring recent graduates, experience in small animal practice and involvement in equine welfare. BVA Council will be asked to endorse their elections at its next meeting on April 4.
Jill will represent Wales on MSG. She is a partner in a small animal practice in Caernarfon. She has already served on BVA Council and the Welsh Branch of the BVA. Jill also started the North Wales Graduate Support Scheme in 2006, which remains very active, and she was recently made a RCVS Postgraduate Dean.
Matthew will represent the east of England on MSG. He is an equine vet practising in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. He is interested in equine welfare and is a published author on the subject; he has also been an expert witness for the RSPCA. He is an RCVS examiner for the certificate in equine practice and a committee member of the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons.
Details of the issues and initiatives that MSG is working on can be found on its webpage at www.bva.co.uk/msg. These include education and student debt; guidance on maternity and paternity matters; and the BVA's Memorandum of Understanding with the RSPCA, with the charity's contribution to the cost of emergency treatment being a particularly hot topic.
