US study finds increasing need for veterinary skills

THE need for veterinary expertise in non-traditional areas is increasing, and the profession must meet this need in order to remain relevant to society.

These were among the key messages to emerge from a study of ‘Workforce needs in veterinary medicine’, carried out by the National Academy of Sciences in the USA. The study aimed to assess the current state of the veterinary medical workforce in the USA and to make projections on future needs across all sectors. It also made recommendations for how those needs could be met.
