EFRACom to investigate dog control and welfare policies

THE Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRACom) has launched an inquiry to examine the Government's dog control and welfare policies.

The inquiry will include consideration of the measures for tackling irresponsible dog ownership that were announced for consultation by Defra on April 23 (VR, April 28, 2012, vol 170, pp 424, 425-426). In particular, the committee is seeking views on whether the Government's proposed approaches will deliver the right legal framework, enforcement regime and educational support to reduce irresponsible dog ownership and tackle out of control dogs.

EFRACom also wishes to receive comments on the response of government and dog breeders to Professor Bateson's independent inquiry into dog breeding (VR, January 23, 2010, vol 166, pp 91-92), which made recommendations for improving the health and welfare of dogs …
