Vet appointed to the House of Lords

PROFESSOR Alexander (Sandy) Trees has been appointed to the House of Lords. Professor Trees, a former dean of the University of Liverpool and the current Veterinary Editor-in-Chief of Veterinary Record, was one of two new non-party-political peers announced by the House of Lords Appointments Commission last week, the other being Beeban Kidron,an award-winning film director. The first vet to enter the House of Lords in more than 20 years, Professor Trees will join Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior in the upper house, where he will sit on the crossbenches.

Professor Trees graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1969. His subsequent career has spanned general practice, industry and academia and has involved working in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Most of it has been spent as a researcher and teacher in parasitology at the University of Liverpool, where he held a number of posts over a period of 30 years, starting in 1980. He recently retired as Professor of Veterinary Parasitology at Liverpool, where he was dean of the veterinary faculty from 2001 to 2008.
