Netherlands rabies case highlights importance of following pet travel rules

A PAPER describing the chain of events that led to a rabid puppy being imported into the Netherlands from Morocco via Spain in February this year has recently been published in the journal Eurosurveillance.

The paper describes how a Dutch couple residing in Morocco obtained an eight-week-old puppy in a car park. The puppy was examined by a local veterinarian, who microchipped it and issued a certificate of good health, although no vaccinations were given.

The couple subsequently travelled by car and ferry to Spain where, at a veterinary clinic, they obtained a pet passport for the puppy. They then flew back to the Netherlands.
