ON February 29, John Francis McKenna, MVB, MRCVS, of Pegasus House, 230 London Road, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Mr McKenna qualified from Dublin in 1966.

Bridget Taylor writes: John McKenna was born in Dublin and grew up in the Sutton area of the city. His parents, both native Gaelic speakers, came from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, and from them John inherited his love of Irish language, music and literature. He was the eldest of six children. During his teenage years he developed what was to become a lifelong passion for sport, in particular horseracing. He attended St Fintan's School in Sutton, before enrolling at University College Dublin (UCD) to study veterinary medicine. He was a keen athlete, representing UCD as a middle-distance runner and competing successfully against Irish international runners. During his year as captain of the athletics team, he played a major part in healing the rift in Irish athletics when UCD competed against Trinity College Dublin. University vacations provided the opportunity to visit England to earn some money on building sites and in factories but, more importantly, to visit famous English racecourses.
