BVA calls for further review of pedigree breed standards

THE BVA has called for a further review of the Kennel Club breed standards for pedigree dogs.

It suggested the review when commenting on the television programme ‘Pedigree Dogs Exposed – Three Years On’, shown on BBC4 on February 27. The programme explored progress since the original ‘Pedigree Dogs Exposed’ was broadcast in 2008, highlighting the welfare issues surrounding the selective breeding of dogs. BVA past-president, Harvey Locke, said: ‘The programme featured some good progress but highlighted the fact that there is much more to be done to tackle irresponsible dog breeding and breeding for extreme characteristics and fashion.
