Prohibited substances
The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has set up a new system to allow anyone involved in equestrian sport or with an interest in it to submit suggestions for consideration for its 2013 Equine Prohibited Substances List. The FEI says that the move follows feedback from vets, athletes and horse owners requesting that substances be removed or added to the list, or switched from the Controlled Medication Substances section to the Banned Substances section, or vice versa. A downloadable form is available at www.feicleansport.org/FEI_Prohibited_List_Submissions_2013_MARCH2012_active.pdf, and should be returned to the FEI by March 30.
Testing for Johne's disease
The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency has announced that its Herdsure cattle health improvement service for Johne's disease has been extended to include the testing of milk. It says that the ELISA used has been validated by AHVLA scientists and found to be very similar in characteristics, limitations and sensitivity to the established blood test.
One health approach to antimicrobial resistance
The RCVS, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists will be holding a one-day symposium on antimicrobial resistance in London on October 2. Organised in association with the Health Protection Agency, the meeting, ‘Antimicrobial resistance in human and veterinary medicine – one health, one problem?’, aims to bring together medical and veterinary scientists and leading practitioners to discuss the issue. It will consider the rapidly growing importance of antimicrobial use and misuse globally, the impact of travel and the historical outcomes of previous restrictions on use. CVPM success
Three practice managers were successful in the 2011 examinations for the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM). Lisa Marter of the Arundel Equine Hospital, Lucy Bartlett of Scott Dunn's Equine Clinic and Louise O'Hara of the Windmill Veterinary Centre all met the required standard.
