BVA calls for more investigation of welfare abuse at abattoir

THE BVA President, Harvey Locke, has written to the chief executive of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to press for further investigations of breaches of animal welfare legislation at an Essex abattoir, which were recorded by the animal rights group Animal Aid.

The footage showed pigs being abused and manhandled in breach of animal welfare legislation, and the BVA is challenging the FSA to investigate the incident further to enable Defra to consider prosecutions against the abattoir.
