IN a further tribute to John Malcolm Morris (VR, November 5, 2011, vol 169, pp 501–502), Tim Udall writes: In 1995, Malcolm Morris joined the newly formed Meat Hygiene Service (MHS), in which veterinary surgeons were to play a significant role in the implementation of new EU regulations. The service was divided into five regions, with a regional director and a team of resource managers, support staff, meat inspectors and contracted Official Veterinary Surgeons (OVSs). Each region also appointed Principal Official Veterinary Surgeons (POVSs), mostly as full-time civil servants. Malcolm Morris was one of those for the Welsh Region. He had already worked within his farm animal practice as a contracted OVS and Local Veterinary Inspector for local authorities and MAFF in export red and poultry meat plants.
