PRESS reports on the BVA Congress debate on ‘Dog breeding – where is it going?’ make very depressing reading, for despite considerable effort on the Kennel Club side, it would appear that the Advisory Council on the Welfare Issues of Dog Breeding and elements of the veterinary profession still have no clear understanding of the way dogs are bred, sold and owned in the UK.
For a veterinary surgeon to call for a ban on dog shows is a nonsense. This suggests a naive belief that this single act would significantly contribute to solving problems of canine health whereas the opposite is true. …
