THE current situation regarding the regulation of equine artificial insemination (AI) technicians is unsafe in terms of both horse welfare and monitoring of disease status, according to Madeleine Campbell, an equine reproduction specialist.
Speaking in a debate on the regulation of paraprofessionals at the BVA Congress on September 23, she explained that this situation had arisen because, in 2010, under EU law the task of AI had been opened up to anyone with an EU qualification ‘equivalent’ to that offered in the UK – but no one had stated what these equivalent qualifications were.
