Andrew Trawford, director of veterinary services at The Donkey Sanctuary, writes: Elisabeth Svendsen died peacefully aged 81, after a sudden stroke, with family and her lifelong friend June Evers by her bedside.

‘Dr S’, as she was affectionately known, was born in Elland, West Yorkshire, on January 23, 1930. She was recognised by the veterinary profession in 1992 by the award of an honorary doctorate in veterinary medicine and surgery from the University of Glasgow. In 2009, she was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Edinburgh in recognition of decades of pioneering work in the care and welfare of donkeys.
